چکیده

Succinic acid produced by various microorganisms can be used as a precursor of many industrially important chemicals in food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The assessment of raw material cost and the estimation of the potential market size clearly indicate that the current petroleum-based succinic acid process will be replaced by the fermentative succinic acid production system in the foreseeable future. This paper reviews processes for fermentative succinic acid production, especially focusing on the use of several promising succinic acid producers including Actinobacillus succinogenes, Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens, Mannheimia succiniciproducens and recombinant Escherichia coli. Processes for the recovery of succinic acid from fermentation broth are also reviewed briefly. Finally, we suggest further works required to improve the strain performance suitable for successful commercialization of fermentative succinic acid production. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Recovery of succinic acid produced by fermentation of a metabolically engineered Mannheimia succiniciproducens strain.

There have recently been much advances in the production of succinic acid, an important four-carbon dicarboxylic acid for many industrial applications, by fermentation of several natural and engineered bacterial strains. Mannheimia succiniciproducens MBEL55E isolated from bovine rumen is able to produce succinic acid with high efficiency, but also produces acetic, formic and lactic acids just l...

Enterobacter sp. LU1 as a novel succinic acid producer – co‐utilization of glycerol and lactose

Succinic acid is an important C4-building chemical platform for many applications. A novel succinic acid-producing bacterial strain was isolated from goat rumen. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA sequence and physiological analysis indicated that the strain belongs to the genus Enterobacter. This is the first report of a wild bacterial strain from the genus Enterobacter that is capabl...

Enhanced Succinic Acid Production from Sake Lees Hydrolysate by Dilute Sulfuric Acid Pretreatment and Biotin Supplementation

Succinic acid is valued as a potential starting point for the production of chemicals of the C4 family or in the preparation of biodegradable polymers. For sustainable development in this era of petroleum shortage, production of succinic acid by microbial fermentation of renewable feedstock has attracted great interest. In this study, pretreatment with sulfuric acid and biotin supplementation w...

Effects of medium components on the growth of Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens and succinic acid production

Several factors affecting cell growth and succinic acid production by Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens were examined by cultivating cells under various conditions. Maximum specific growth rate in the flask cultivation increased with increasing initial glucose concentration up to 20 g/l glucose. The distribution of fermentation products was not affected by glucose concentration, and the rat...

Succinic acid production from xylose mother liquor by recombinant Escherichia coli strain

Succinic acid (1,4-butanedioic acid) is identified as one of important building-block chemicals. Xylose mother liquor is an abundant industrial residue in xylitol biorefining industry. In this study, xylose mother liquor was utilized to produce succinic acid by recombinant Escherichia coli strain SD121, and the response surface methodology was used to optimize the fermentation media. The optima...
